Home Remedies (that actually work!) Items you have around your house may be just what you need to overcome an earache, cold, or itchy skin.
I. ONION For a fever, cut an onion in half, placing each half into a sock. Put the socks on with the cut side of the onion against the soles of your feet. Keep the socks on for a few hours or until the fever breaks. **This home remedy has been around for ages and is said to work because the onion is part of the allium group of plants which has anti-inflammatory properties.
2. CRISCO You or your child has irritable, itchy, dry scaly skin--could be eczema. Cover yourself or the child in Crisco 2-3 times a day. A little bit goes a long way and can attract dirt. The emollient properties of shortening protect the skin. Flaxseed oil also soothes and retain's skins moisture and may allow the skin to breathe better than the Crisco.
3. GARLIC For an achy ear, place a few drops of warm garlic oil into the sore ear. This will help keep you off unnecessary antibiotics. Let the oil sit in the ear for about for about a minute and a half or more--then let it drain out naturally. Repeat three times until symptoms are gone.
4. FEET For cold-like symptoms--at night, rub Vicks VapoRub on the bottoms of your feet and put socks on, then go to bed for the night. It works because the bottoms of our feet have acupressure points that when pressed are believed to relieve coughing. Vicks VapoRub also has eucalyptus which is known to help ease congestion.
Many of these remedies are old as the hills, but are still holding strong as natural remedies to some of today's ailments. Save your money first, and use your household items to get over common symptoms before running to the doctor's office or pharmacy.
Many of these ideas were taken from the magazine, babytalk (Aug. 2010 edition)
