                                   Supplements?
As many of you know, nutrition is a topic that piques my interest more than any other contributor to one's health.  Only recently have I realized the full capacity that our nutrition has on our overall well-being.  Proper nutrition can eliminate digestive problems like IBS; it can reduce symptoms of asthma, arthritis, acne, inflammation, water retention, diabetes, heart attacks; it can create energy; normalize the body's pH balance; improve fertility, etc.  Companies will promote different diets, or eliminating different foods as specific ways to cure symptoms of any of these conditions--but it all comes back to eating real foods...and supplementing.  We are exposed to so many more toxins, environmental allergens, and stress that impede our bodies' normal functioning--therefore we need to supplement to counteract those stressor's on our systems.   A few that I highly recommend for any person to improve one's basic overall health are:

Fish Oil--- Shown to help prevent cardiovascular disease, help prevent diabetes and cancer, and a new study shows they help prevent mental illness.  Make sure to choose your fish oil supplements wisely--many contain fillers and only a trace amount of fish oil extract in them--don't settle for cheap.
Click here for the brand I use and highly recommend.

Digestive Enzymes---Shown to help digest fats, carbohydrates, and proteins more efficiently to ensure your body is getting all the nutrients from the food you eat.  It also helps to relieve indigestion and heartburn.  Many of the processed foods we eat break down the digestive enzymes our bodies' naturally contain and they become ineffective.  Read more.

Probiotics--Shown to be another supplement to improve our digestive system by replacing our gut with healthy bacteria that is killed off through intake of antibiotics and processed food, support healthy immunity, enhance mineral absorption, support colon function and bowel health, and much more.

Multivitamin--Should provide 100% or more of daily vitamins and nutrients to promote a healthy immune system, promote balance of needed vitamins and minerals in the body for proper system function, and sustain energy and health.  Here is my pick!

I highly recommend Nature's Sunshine as a well-known, reliable supplement company.  Many cheap, over-the-counter supplements are filled with chemicals, and fillers, or are not even digestible by the body.  Therefore, you never receive the full benefit of the product.

A fun game we played as a warm-up to our Pre-Christmas Workout!

Silver Strength!

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning I arrive at Parkside Homes Congregate Bldg. to a group of silver-haired, smiling, chatty seniors.  At 8:30 a.m. sharp, I fill the room with musical hits from the 30's and 40's and we push, pull, stand, sit, and challenge our brains in activities to improve strength, balance, mobility, and coordination.  The benefits of strength training and movement for seniors is endless.  Just a few of the improvements seen through participation in my class are: decrease in falls, lowered blood pressure and resting heart rate, improved shoulder mobility, reduced arthritis pain, improved focus and memory, increased energy levels post-workout, better endurance, and improved rhythm.
